Our Services

We offer a meeting service run from offices at 157 Anglesea Street, level 2 of the consulting suites in Hamilton. At this office you will be interviewed and as much detail about your case will be recorded as our staff can.

From this initial interview, your file will be reviewed independently by Mr Charles Bean and you will be contacted with a view on whether we can help your case or not.

If you engage us then to work on your case, we will develop a comprehensive defence/appellate strategy. This involves finding all the facts and identifying all legal issues.

The taking on of a case is considered by Mr Charles Bean personally. We welcome inquiries from clients or their representatives (family, friends, whanau or other lawyers).

On accepting your case, we will skilfully and zealously argue the case or appeal at every level.

Legal Aid Funding:

For our clients that are not in a position to pay their legal fees, we will help you check if you are eligible for legal aid funding.

Legal aid is government funding to pay for legal help for people who cannot afford a lawyer. It exists to help people who cannot afford legal help, and genuinely need that help in the interests of justice. Fortunately, legal aid clients are still able to select their preferred lawyer for criminal appeal matters.

Whether you are eligible for legal aid will mainly depend on your income and assets. We will help you check if you are eligible for legal aid funding however in general, legal aid may be granted if:

  • you can’t afford your own lawyer and
  • the interests of justice require that you be granted legal aid.

To determine whether you can afford a lawyer, Legal Aid Services will consider:

  • how much you earn before tax
  • the value of your assets, such as your property and vehicle
  • how many financially dependent children you have.

If you are married or in a de-facto relationship, your partner’s finances will also be taken into account.

You may have to repay some or all of your legal aid, depending on:

  • your before-tax income, and
  • your total assets.

Legal Aid will use the financial information you give on your application form to work out whether you have to pay anything back.
